Week (1) July 3-7:  “Teen Leadership Training”  $300* One spot leftIMG_4399

Teen Leadership Training is a vital component of Sassafras for two reasons. It allows youth ‘coming up’ in our programs, to continue their journey towards independence and responsibility, while being witnessed growing into their passions and gifts. Second, home-grown, embodied leadership is the best role-modeling we can offer our younger youth. Teens and Tweens start training at approximately age 12, and we ask them to commit to assisting for 1-2 additional weeks of Summer Camp (or comparable Year-round Programs). Leadership development in our Nature Connection approach, entails developing a sound sense of self, deepening our nature connection, developing earth skills, and growing awareness around social learning. In this small scale program (6-8 youth), we are able to really cater to individual development and interest. After the ideal 3 year trajectory, teens become “full on” Teen Leaders that begin to get compensated at age 16. Our staff training runs concurrent on some days, to ensure connection between staff and teens in training before the onset of Summer Camp.   Note this is 4 day week, as there is no program on Tuesday July 4th.

Week (2) July 10-14:  “Survival, Nature & Earth Skills I”    $300*   FULL

Our “classic” survival curriculum from the past 10+ years helps youth learn tangible outdoor skills and meet bite size edges, while developing valuable life skills. Sassafras is quoted by many parents as fun, boosting confidence, developing respect, and honoring individual passions. While having summer fun is naturally high on our list, Sassafras kids learn lots about our local environment and natural history, about themselves and how to work together as a team of diverse individuals. All weeks are equally suitable for new kids and for returnees from summer and  year-round programs, as we mentor in small groups. Activities kids love to do in our summer programs are: exploring woods and streams, build our own campsites, forts or fairy houses, move and act like the animals that live here, listen for bird language, build fires, whittle, plant ID of our favorite edibles, a day at the beach, sharing nature stories, and playing tons of nature games and our Sassafras ‘sport” JTC. The first survival week has no overnight experience.

Week (3) July 17-21:   “Survival, Nature & Earth Skills II”  $300* / $375 with 1 Overnight  FULL

Week II includes ancient and modern shelter building skills for a variety of purpose. Shelters will be utilized during the overnight. Kids that are too young or opt out, can contribute in the building process and be inspired for future opportunities. Kids opting for the overnight  will remain at Sassafras from Thursday 9am till Friday 3pm. The overnight is geared towards ages 8/9 and up.

Week (4)  July 24-28:  “Water”   $375*   FULL

A favorite for years now is our “Water Week” with Sassafras co-founder David Vanderhoop. David has roamed the Aquinnah woods and waters since he could walk, he is a Wampanoag native, fisherman, hunter-gatherer and grandpa. This week we explore streams and pond habitat, explore shores, go fishing, crabbing, find shellfish, learn about edibles along the shoreline and play water games. Building common sense, boosting confidence, learning to respect the water, yourself and others are all vital elements of this week, along with summer island fun that naturally includes water. Safety is ensured under the watchful eyes of several older, more experienced staff  plus a lifeguard. This summer we balance time along the coast and in the full sun, with summer & water fun in our base camp’s shaded woodlands.

Week (5) July 31-Aug 4  “Survival, Nature & Earth Skills III”   $300* / $375* with 1 Overnight   FULL
