June 28 Social & Environmental Justice and being allies. The recent visit of Standing Rock documentary makers to our island and our home, has brought up a lot of questions around how to even begin conversation in a respectful way on such a complex and grief-loaded topic. David Vanderhoop expresses how we can begin that conversation at the intersection of social and environmental issues, from his native perspective. Questions we recently heard are “what can I do?”, “how can I support native people?” and “how do I address these topics in a respectful way?” After David’s inspirational storytelling, we invite your sharing. Read on below.

A new and open fire circle for adults of all gender orientations. Fire Circles provide an important place for healing, by sharing and listening to what’s present in ourselves and others. In the current times with endless challenges, circles are pillars for community and village building, as circles value equanimity, difference and growth of understanding. With Nature Connection as a core value, circles “optimize” and bring out “the best” in people.  Sassafras makes a conscious choice to create a space where we can address issues that are up front, big deals to you; it is in these areas that we find opportunity for personal growth. What happens in fire circles is magical, over the years we see people leave feeling connected, recharged, and with an increased sense of meaning. We meet outside around a consciously set up, and well tended fire. During inclement weather we retreat into our heated yurt. Sharing is confidential and we value authentic expression and deep listening. This will be the first in an ongoing series of monthly gatherings, and we’d love to ask for your support in making this a succes. Please join us, and invite a friend, partner or co-worker. It’s free and there will be a donation jar present for those wanting to donate to Sassafras. Donations of firewood are always welcome!

VILLAGE Fire Day for All Ages

Date this Fall t.b.a.
Time:

Families, adults, teens, youth with parents, all are welcome to join our Village, a new concept to create community in and around nature. Bring a lunch and, if you like, a craft or skill to work on or to share with others. You choose what you do, sit by the fire to hear some nature stories. re-connect with friends or make new ones, work on a craft or skill, cook something over the fire, or learn something unexpected as nature is always teaching. You can go out on the land for a sit spot or nature meditation, and return to the fire to share with us what you observed, we are interested in your story. Sassafras creates space for connective experiences and all that you bring. What we ask of you is to show up fully, be outside, be present, and to enjoy yourself. Donations are appreciated if you feel the love.

Screen Shot 2014-10-23 at 2.04.56 PMFor a decade now, Saskia Vanderhoop hosts a monthly Women Fire Circle,  providing a safe space of support and sisterhood with nature connection at the center. The first circle in September is open and free to all that are interested. Consecutive circles are for a closed, committed group and monthly topics and questions for pondering and conversation will be sent prior to each date (above) to deepen our experience in this journey. We meet either outside around a consciously set up fire (as weather permits), or we meet inside our cozy yurt by candle-light. Sharing is confidential and we invite and encourage personal growth, as we create and hold space together. Connection with our natural surroundings, ourselves, others and the great mystery, is at the basis of our Nature Connection Mentoring approach. If you are interested in joining, please come to our open circle on Monday  September 11, to try it out. Sign up as soon as you are ready,  as group space is limited. Women that are looking to step into a support role, are encouraged to communicate with Saskia.
